Canine tapeworms and specific treatment drugs

Toxocariasis is acquired by humans ingesting Toxocara worm eggs (including Toxocara canis in dogs and Toxocara cati in cats) through contact with infected cats and dogs. Or eat dirty food containing worm eggs, infected dog and cat meat that has not been cooked.

After entering the body, the worm eggs hatch in the small intestine and the larvae can travel in the bloodstream to different parts of the body. This includes the liver, heart, lungs, brain, muscles or eyes. When the worm larvae travel through the bloodstream to the organs, they cause inflammation, which in turn causes damage to the organs they pass through.

Mild cases of cysticercosis may not require treatment as the disease may be self-limiting. However, in patients with moderate to severe symptoms, specific treatment with antiparasitic agents such as:

- Albendazol 400 mg x 2 /day x 5 days

- Mebendazol 100-200 mg x 2/day x 5 days

– Ivermectin 200 g/kg/day 1 single dose

In addition, patients can also receive supportive treatment with drugs to help relieve pain, anti-inflammatory, reduce cough, digestive disorders ... depending on the patient's symptoms.
