Utrogestan (progesterone) side effects 

  • Infertility due to luteal insufficiency.
  • Menopause (in addition to estrogen therapy).
  • Threatened miscarriage or prevention of threatened recurrent miscarriage due to luteal insufficiency.
  • Threatened miscarriage or prevention of recurrent miscarriages due to luteal insufficiency. Threatening premature birth .

How to take Utrogestan (progesterone)

Oral route

You should swallow the tablet whole with a little water, do not take the medicine with food. Take this medicine at bedtime to help you sleep better and avoid falling asleep or staying alert during daytime work.

The average dose is from 200-300 mg per day, divided into 1-2 times/day. Specifically, take 200 mg in the evening before going to bed and 100 mg in the morning if needed.

  • Luteal insufficiency (premenstrual syndrome, benign breast disease, irregular menstruation, premenopause): 10 days treatment/cycle usually from day 17 to day 26.
  • Hormone replacement therapy: estrogen alone is not appropriate, progesterone is given in combination for the last 2 weeks of treatment, followed by discontinuation of all replacement therapy for about 1 week, during which bleeding is possible. .
  • Threatened preterm birth: 400 mg every 6 to 8 hours depending on the results in the acute phase, followed by a maintenance dose (3 x 200 mg/day) until 36 weeks of pregnancy.

How to order utrogestan

First you should wash your hands with soap or use hand sanitizer to kill bacteria and dust. Dry your hands, use your fingers to insert the medicine into the vagina, about 1 finger deep. How to order utrogestan is quite simple, isn't it?

Take 1 utrogestan 200mg pill or 2 utrogestan 100mg pills. Equivalent to 200mg of active ingredient progesterone. However, depending on the type of disease, there will be different doses as below:

  • Ovulation disorders, menstrual irregularities: 200 mg/day, 10 days/cycle, usually starting from day 17 to day 26.
  • Infertility due to complete luteal phase deficiency: start with 100 mg on days 13 and 14 of the embryo transfer cycle, followed by 100 mg in the morning and evening from days 15 to 25 of the cycle. From day 26 and in case of pregnancy increase the dose to 100 mg/day/week to a maximum dose of 600 mg/day 3 times/day. Maintain this dose until day 60.
  • Threatened early miscarriage or prevention of recurrent miscarriages due to luteal insufficiency: 200-400 mg/day in 2 divided doses until week 12 of the cycle.

Utrogestan side effects 

Although there may be local irritation (due to the presence of pea lecithin), any local intolerance (burning, itching, or mucus production) has not been observed in various clinical studies.

When taken orally, the following side effects are common:

  • Headache.
  • Occurrence of cholestatic jaundice, pruritus, digestive disorders.
  • Changes in menstrual cycles, missed periods, bleeding between periods.
  • Transient somnolence and dizziness in patients receiving concomitant use of low-dose estrogen (the effect disappears with dose reduction).

Drug interactions with oral Utrogestan

  • Diazepam .
  • Bromocriptine.
  • Spironolactone .
  • Diabetes medication.
  • Rifampicin , rifabutin (treatment of tuberculosis).
  • Tizanidine (in multiple sclerosis).
  • Antibiotics (ampicillins, tetracyclines).
  • Coumarin, phenindione (anticoagulant).
  • Emergency contraception (ulipristal acetate).
  • Cyclosporin (suppresses the immune system).
  • Medroxyprogesterone acetate, megestrol.
  • Ketoconazole, griseofulvin, terbinafine (antifungal).
  • Phenobarbital, phenytoin, and carbamazepine (to treat epilepsy).
  • Nevirapine, efavirenz, ritonavir and nelfinavir (treatment of HIV infection).

Precautions while using Utrogestan (progesterone)

Under the recommended conditions, this is not a contraceptive. Menstrual cycles may be short or bleed if treatment is started too early, especially before day 15 of the cycle.

In the case of uterine bleeding, Utrogestan should not be used until the cause is determined such as endometrial examination .

Because the risks of thromboembolism and metabolism cannot be completely excluded, treatment should be discontinued in the following cases:

  • Severe headache.
  • Loss of vision, double vision, damage to retinal blood vessels.
  • Venous embolism or venous thrombosis, regardless of location.
  • In case of sudden amenorrhea, make sure you are not pregnant.
  • Patients with prior thrombophlebitis should be examined and closely monitored.

For pregnant or lactating women

There are currently no contraindications to the use of Utrogestan during pregnancy, including in the first weeks of pregnancy. There are no specific studies on whether progesterone passes into breast milk or not, so it should be avoided in nursing women.

Utrogestan (progesterone) overdose

If you take more medicine than prescribed (orally), go to a nearby hospital or medical station for timely treatment. Remember to bring a pack of pills so that the doctor can easily identify the cause and make it easier for the medical professional to handle the job.

What to do when you miss a dose of Utrogestan? 

  • Do not double the dose to make up for the missed dose.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.
  • If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take it at the normal schedule prescribed by your doctor.

How to store medicine?

  • Keep Utrogestan out of the reach of children, young children and pets.
  • Store the medicine in a cool, dry place. Do not place the medicine in a place exposed to direct light or place it in a humid place (bathroom).
