1. What is Tobrex (Tobramycin)?

This is an eye drop solution whose main active ingredient is the antibiotic Tobramycin.

Tobramycin is an antibiotic with bactericidal action. The antibiotic tobramycin has broad antibacterial activity (against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria).

3. How to take Tobrex (Tobramycin)?

About dosage:

  • Recommended dose for mild to moderate disease: instill 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye, 6 times a day.
  • Recommended dose for severe disease: 2 drops in the affected eye every hour until the infection improves. Then gradually reduce the dose until the eye drops stop.
  • Tobrex eye ointment can be used in combination with Tobrex eye drops.

About usage:

This is a medicine for eye drops only. Absolutely do not inject into the eyes.

  • When you open the cover, the securing ring usually comes out. You need to remove it before applying eye drops.
  • Absolutely do not let the tip of the vial touch any surface of the eye and around the eye to avoid infection.
  • To limit systemic absorption of the drug, you can press on the tear ducts or close your eyes after instillation.
  • After instillation, screw the cap on the vial tightly when not in use.
  • If the patient is taking more than one type of eye drop, the drops should be spaced at least 5 minutes apart and the eye ointment should be applied last.

4. What are the possible side effects of Tobrex (Tobramycin)?

Common side effects are eye disorders, including eye discomfort, eye congestion.

Rare ocular side effects include keratitis, corneal erosion, decreased vision, blurred vision, eyelid erythema, conjunctival edema, eyelid edema, eye pain, dry eye, eye discharge, eye itching, increased tear secretion.

5. What should be noted when using Tobrex drug (Tobramycin)

Do not use contact lenses while taking this medication. Tobrex eye drops contain benzalkonium chloride. This substance may cause eye irritation and discolor soft contact lenses. If it is necessary to wear contact lenses, the patient should remove the contact lenses before instilling the medication and wait at least 15 minutes after instilling the lenses before putting them back on.

In patients who are sensitive to topical aminoglycoside antibiotics, they should be monitored and discontinued if hypersensitivity occurs.

Tobramycin has been reported to cause serious side effects including neurotoxicity, ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity with systemic use.

6. What precautions should be taken when taking drugs for pregnant and lactating women?

Pregnancy

  • There are limited data on the use of tobramycin eye drops in pregnant women.
  • Animal studies of the two main active ingredients of Tobrex systemic exposure have shown fetal toxicity.
  • Therefore, the use of Tobrex eye drops during pregnancy is not recommended.

Breastfeeding period

  • There are currently no specific data on whether tobramycin ophthalmic is excreted in human milk.
  • However, tobramycin has been shown to be excreted in human milk following systemic administration.
  • Before use, lactating women need the consent and supervision of a doctor.
